INVESTIGATING THE ROLE OF PROTEST POSTERS AND BILLBOARDS IN RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT GOVERNANCE ISSUES (A CASE STUDY OF ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST).
Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Protest posters and billboards are powerful tools for communicating messages and raising awareness about social and political issues. During the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, which erupted in 2024, these visual elements played a significant role in conveying demands, mobilizing support, and shaping public discourse. As the protests grew in scale and intensity, the use of posters and billboards became a prominent feature in the demonstrators' efforts to highlight issues of governance, corruption, and economic hardship (Channelstv, 2024; Aljazeera, 2024).
The visual nature of posters and billboards allows for immediate and broad dissemination of messages, making them effective for engaging both participants and the wider public. These tools serve not only as means of protest communication but also as symbols of resistance and advocacy. Understanding their role in raising awareness about governance issues provides insights into their effectiveness and influence on public perception and protest outcomes.
The EndBadGovernance protests offer a pertinent case study to explore the impact of these visual tools. Posters and billboards featured slogans, images, and graphics that aimed to draw attention to the protesters' demands and grievances, thus playing a critical role in the protest's communication strategy (Premium Times, 2024; Punchng, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role of protest posters and billboards in the EndBadGovernance protests, there is limited research on their effectiveness in raising awareness about governance issues. The central problem of this study is to investigate how these visual tools contributed to the protest's objectives and their impact on public awareness and engagement regarding governance issues. The study aims to understand the extent to which posters and billboards influenced public perception and mobilization during the protests (Channelstv, 2024; Aljazeera, 2024).
This investigation seeks to fill the gap in understanding the role of visual communication in protest movements and its effectiveness in addressing governance concerns.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the role of visual communication in protest movements, particularly in raising awareness about governance issues. By analyzing the effectiveness of protest posters and billboards, the research provides valuable insights into how visual tools can be leveraged for social and political advocacy.
The findings will inform protest organizers, activists, and policymakers about the power of visual communication in shaping public discourse and mobilizing support. Additionally, the study contributes to the broader field of communication studies and protest research by highlighting the impact of visual elements on public engagement and perception.
1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The study focuses on the use of protest posters and billboards during the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, specifically examining their content, impact, and effectiveness. The scope is limited to the visual tools used in the 2024 protests and may not address other forms of protest communication or the long-term impact of these tools beyond the immediate period of the protests.
